The University of Pennsylvania is continuing its work on GPS-independent swarming quadcopters, which differentiate themselves from the mass of drone news out there by virtue of being able to coordinate with one another and a base station using just a monocular VGA camera and an inertial measurement unit. IEEE has a thorough examination of how the small drones could be utilized for delivery, working together to deliver large packages or to take over from one another’s routes in the event of a failure. Since they don’t require GPS to navigate, the system works equally well indoors or outside.
