The first production unit of Tesla’s Model 3, eagerly awaited by the electric car startup’s fans as the “affordable” alternative to the luxury Model S, was revealed on July 7.

The first car will go to Tesla CEO Elon Musk as a gift from the first person to reserve one, Tesla board member Ira Ehrenpreis.

Customers who have already ordered Model 3 cars will begin to receive them in late July. Orders are backed up far enough that the details of Model 3 customization are still unclear. It is listed on Tesla’s website as retailing for $35,000 and coming with optional Autopilot and dual motors. Preorders required a $1,000 deposit.
