A line of surface-engineered stainless steel strip materials takes advantage of new manufacturing processes that can apply coatings with excellent adhesion and purity to stainless steel strip. The result is many new combinations of substrates and surface layers that provide enhanced material properties. Surface engineered strip can be manufactured according to customer specifications, such as electrical conductivity, resistivity, corrosion, surface function, and decorative appearance. The line allows engineers to produce complex coatings on any stainless steel strip with multiple layer options and few limitations on coating material. The optimum combination of substrate material and surface layer can be adjusted to meet specific application needs. Surface layers can consist of any metallic element, including aluminum, nickel, copper, and silver as well as mixtures of elements or binary compounds, such as aluminum oxide (Al2O3) or titanium oxide (TiO2). Coatings are single- or double-sided, with thicknesses ranging from tenths of nanometers to a few microns. The coatings can be different on each side of the strip. They feature a maximum thickness tolerance of 䔮 percent of the surface layer and offer guaranteed levels of surface roughness. The coatings are said to contain a low level of impurities and foreign elements. Cold formable and bendable to tight radii, the strip products provide a high level of strip flatness to ensure accuracy in cutting, stamping, and etching operations. Santronic surface engineered strip is designed specifically to meet the needs of the electronic industry. Electronic applications include tactile domes, contact springs, and shielding. The material can also be used to improve the soldering properties of electronic components.
