Power-over-ethernet

A line of IEEE 802.3af power-over-Ethernet solutions provide DC power to remote devices via Category 5 Ethernet cable. Using power-over-Ethernet to power remote devices has several advantages such as the power supply can be centrally located where it can be attached to an uninterruptible power supply. The user has the ability to easily power-on-reset the attached equipment from a remote location. There is no need to run additional power cabling to the device as power can be supplied over the Category 5 Ethernet cable. The power inserters and splitters can be used to power remote radio equipment, surveillance cameras, network attached storage devices, and VOIP equipment. In many cases the splitter is not required because the equipment is already enabled for power-over-Ethernet operation. All power inserters and splitters are auto sensing to operate over a large input voltage range. Most models include power line and Ethernet surge protection to protect valuable equipment from electrical surges caused by lightning or other power surges.
