Because of a high strength-to-weight ratio, cryogenic properties, and corrosion resistance, titanium is often the material of choice for demanding applications in the aerospace industry. However, titanium is not always easy to use. Pressed to reduce production time and costs, aerospace engineers can use a line of near-net extruded titanium shapes designed to produce cost savings and lower material usage. The near-net extrusion process creates the desired profile, to within close tolerances for both dimensions and straightness, in fewer steps and with less material than processes such as forging or casting. Other advantages include long lengths, low machining and finishing costs, low tooling costs, and the potential to design more complex shapes in order to reduce parts count and downstream assembly. In addition, titanium extrusions offer elevated temperature performance, weldability, and machinability.
