Simi Valley, CA– Hirose Electric Co. has demonstrated the capability to provide medical electronics design engineers with a miniaturized, robust and cost-effective replacement sensor connector for users of blood glucose monitoring devices and strips. The sensor connector was developed to meet customer requirements, which included reducing connector volume by 75 percent, PCB footprint by 55 percent and the capability to accept multiple types of blood sensor strips.
In addition to reducing the size of the connector and increasing its blood strip compatibility, Hirose was able to increase mating cycles to more than 10,000, improve PCB retention with a more robust design and decrease the overall bill of materials cost of the end product.

“Depending on the customers’ requirements, we have the ability to design connectors with 50,000 or even 100,000 cycles.”
The design of Hirose’s sensor connector incorporates an automated ejection mechanism for the blood sensor, which allows a more hygienic approach to strip removal. Users can just push a button to self-eject the strip without the need to handle it. Reduced height and weight meet the demands by consumers for a more compact solution that can easily be concealed and carried on a consistent basis.
Hirose also enhanced the connector with a robust PCB retention design to ensure durability and increase product life cycle, while allowing customers to continue using their preferred sizes of the monitoring strips. Lead times for these sensor connectors range from 12 to 16 weeks.
