TOKYO, Jan. 10 (Kyodo) — Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius hybrid was the top-selling car in 2012 in Japan for the fourth year in a row, industry bodies said Thursday.

The Prius sold a total of 317,675 units last year, up 25.8 percent from the year before.

In 2012, fuel-efficient hybrid cars and minivehicles proved popular, supported by a government subsidy program for the purchase of environmentally friendly vehicles which terminated in September.

Toyota's Aqua hybrid, which hit the Japanese market in December 2011, ranked second, selling 266,567 units, followed by Daihatsu Motor Co.'s Mira minivehicle.

Of the 10 best-selling cars, six were minivehicles with engines of no more than 660 cc, including Honda Motor Co.'s N BOX and Suzuki Motor Corp.'s Wagon R, which came fourth and sixth in the rankings.

The rankings are based on data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Mini Vehicles Association.
