Marketing Services with Facial Recognition Technology

NEC Corp. said Wednesday it has started providing new services for shop operators to help them analyze customer trends using its facial recognition technology.

With the services, retailers will be able to analyze the shopping behavior of different age groups, for example, as the facial images captured by cameras installed at outlets can be used to group customers with high accuracy, NEC said.

The services, so far available only in Japan, are priced from 70,000 yen a month per outlet. NEC said it is much cheaper than shop owners developing their own systems as the services use NEC's cloud computing systems, where the image data will be stored.

NEC said its customer analysis services are the first in Japan to cloud computing technology.

NEC's facial recognition technology ranked top in an accuracy evaluation test conducted in 2010 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States, according to the Tokyo-based company.
