Sturgeon Bay's Bay Shipbuilding announces layoffs
State authorities say they have been informed that Bay Shipbuilding Co. of Sturgeon Bay plans to lay off 116 employees starting in April.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Thursday that the firm says the layoffs will be in addition to the 405 layoffs announced last August. Those start in October.
The Manitowoc Co. sold the company to a subsidiary of Italy's Fincantieri-Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. in early 2009.
The company's Web site says Bay Shipbuilding specializes in large ship construction projects, including dredges, barges and tugs.
Bay Shipbuilding told state authorities earlier this week that it is trying to mitigate the planned layoffs "by aggressively seeking new business."
