ATEK Acquires Datakey Electronics

Designed for security and data transfer applications, memory systems from Datakey Electronics are used worldwide in markets and applications also served by other ATEK Products divisions.

Brainerd, MN— ATEK Products, LLC, has acquired Datakey Electronics, Savage, MN, as a complement to ATEK’s existing portfolio of solutions for sensing, security, and safety systems. Datakey Electronics designs and manufactures rugged, portable memory keys and tokens for data transport, security, and access control applications in diverse industries worldwide, including: military, medical, transportation, and industrial.

The unique memory devices can be reliably used in extreme environments where consumer memory devices such as USB flash drives, SD cards, or smart cards would not survive — environments that include temperature extremes, static electricity, dust, dirt, moisture, shock, and vibration.

Datakey Electronics’ security and access control technologies will be leveraged by other divisions of ATEK Products, including Larco®, manufacturer of automatic door, industrial safety and security solutions and TankScan, provider of remote tank-level monitoring systems.

Says ATEK Products president Jim Bartel, “There is an excellent strategic fit between Datakey Electronics’ underlying technology and the application opportunities within ATEK Products’ existing businesses and markets.”

The systems manufactured by Datakey Electronics generally consist of a small, rugged memory key and a mating receptacle, which OEMs integrate into their embedded systems. These devices have been used for over three decades for access control or data transport in a wide variety of applications.

“ATEK is gaining synergistic technologies, as well as sales, engineering, and manufacturing expertise through this acquisition,” Bartel says. Datakey Electronics will operate as a division of ATEK Products. The company’s manufacturing facility will remain in Savage, MN and all employees have been retained.
