DETROIT (AP) — United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger says opponents of the union's deal with Ford Motor Co. are putting out misinformation to get members to vote against it.
Gettelfinger says in an interview Saturday with The Associated Press that the union did not give up its right to strike in the next round of contract talks as claimed by opponents. He says the UAW can strike on every issue but wage and benefit increases.
Ford's 41,000 UAW workers are voting on a deal that brings the Dearborn automaker near labor cost parity with Chrysler and General Motors. Both companies went through bankruptcy protection and won deep concessions including no-strike clauses.
Gettelfinger says the deal preserves jobs and prepares Ford for the future.
