PENOBSCOT, Maine (AP) — Fire officials believe lightning from a violent thunderstorm started fires early Friday that nearly destroyed a summer house on Isle Au Haut, Maine, and a home in Guilford. The storm also knocked out power to thousands and washed out many roads.
About 50 Isle Au Haut residents rushed to help fire crews, saving the newly renovated 1918 summer house from destruction and saving the 100-year-old island schoolhouse next door.
The Bangor Daily News reports lightning also struck a Guilford home, causing extensive damage. The family sleeping inside was not hurt.
The storm knocked out power to about 2,300 Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. customers, most of those in Penobscot County.
