JENKINSVILLE, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. is testing dozens of sirens in the area surrounding its nuclear plant near Columbia.
The power company says it's testing the 106 sirens within a 10-mile radius of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Fairfield County at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The company says residents shouldn't panic, since the one-minute sounding is only a test. In the event of an emergency, the sirens would go off for three minutes and tell residents to tune to radio or television for more information.
The plant is located near Jenkinsville, about 25 miles northwest of Columbia. SCE&G also tested the sirens in July.
