Rehberg wants Treasury to mint palladium coin

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg has introduced a bill to mint a coin out of palladium, which is mined exclusively in the United States by Montana's Stillwater Mining Co.

The bill would require the U.S. Treasury to mint a reproduction of a 1907 bullion coin. Rehberg, R-Mont., says the coin will increase demand for palladium and give a boost to Stillwater, which recently lost its metals supply contract with General Motors. The proposed coin would be a reproduction of one that was originally made of gold.

Columbus-based Stillwater employs more than 1,300 people and runs the only platinum and palladium mines in the United States, about 90 miles southwest of Billings in the Beartooth Mountains.
