Northrop Grumman warns of possible layoffs

Defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. said Friday it has warned 52 employees at a U.S. Navy base in New Orleans that they might be losing their jobs.

The company notified the employees at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in New Orleans as required by a federal law that orders companies to provide advance notice to workers in the event of potential large layoffs.

Northrop management said the company is waiting to receive an award from the government that would allow it to continue providing maintenance support to a Navy Reserve E-2C Hawkeye squadron at the base.

The company said it is confident it will eventually receive the award but took steps to notify employees as required by law.

The company has been providing support to the squadron since 1995.

Shares of Northrop Grumman added 12 cents to $58.76 in aftermarket trading after rising 20 cents to $58.64 during the regular session.
