NJ transformer blast causes fire, power failure

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Police say many buildings in downtown Newark have lost power after a transformer explosion and underground fire.

Officials say three people were injured Tuesday but their conditions aren't yet known.

Newark police say Public Service Electric & Gas was working on the transformer when it caught fire and exploded.

Workers in a downtown building say they heard a loud boom and everyone evacuated.

Black plumes of smoke came from the ground but disappeared as firefighters extinguished flaming debris.

PSE&G says it's trying to determine extent of damage.
