Regional freight railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc. said Tuesday its traffic rose 9.7 percent in November, mostly because of added carloads from an acquisition.
The company moved 80,454 carloads last month, compared with 73,365 carloads in November 2010. Excluding 7,691 carloads from the acquisition of FreightLink, traffic fell 2.6 percent. Genesee said the decrease in its core traffic mostly resulted from a decline in coal and coke shipments in Illinois. Traffic in the railroad's uncategorized segment rose from a year earlier.
The decreases were partially offset by a jump in steel and scrap metal shipments in the South. Overall, metals carloads rose 33 percent. By commodity group, the next biggest segment jump was in chemicals and plastics. Carloads in that segment rose 8.1 percent.
Shares of Genesee & Wyoming rose 37 cents to $60.76.
