Fiat expanding Brazil auto plant

Fiat's Brazil subsidiary says it will hire 1,000 new workers in the next three months to ramp up production.

Fiat says in an e-mailed statement it wants to increase daily production by about 6.5 percent at a plant in the state of Minas Gerais.

The new workers at the Betim plant mean the Brazilian subsidiary of Fiat SpA will produce about 190 more cars per day.

It produces about 3,000 cars daily now.

The CEO of Fiat in Brazil, Cledorvino Belini, says Thursday domestic demand for cars is the reason for the expansion.

He says demand in the first quarter is expected to increase nearly 14 percent as compared to the same period last year.
