WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — More mining jobs in eastern Kentucky are being cut due to the troubled economy.
The Harlan Daily Enterprise reports that Cumberland River Coal cut the jobs of 85 miners in Letcher County last week.
Cumberland River Coal parent company, St. Louis-based Arch Coal, cited an expected decrease in sales volume for the cuts.
Arch Coal spokeswoman Kim Link says the company tried to cut spending to avoid layoffs, but that job cuts were made "as a last resort."
