Corporate CEOs push for job growth

A group of chief executives has been meeting with state political leaders to push for job development.

Fourteen executives have organized the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership. They include Raytheon Co. CEO William Swanson, Liberty Mutual's Edmund Kelly and Ronald L. Sargent of Staples Inc.

John Fish, chief executive of Suffolk Construction Co. in Boston, says businesses can offer a perspective on job creation.

The executives have pushed for consolidating state agencies that work with businesses and for creation of local "growth districts" that would receive money for public works development.

Fish said the group is interested in economic development across Massachusetts, not just Boston. He says that despite its base among large corporations, the group believes job growth will be driven mostly by small and midsize businesses.
