Company gets $30M grant for Ohio power plant

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — The U.S. Energy Department is giving a $30 million grant to a Pennsylvania company to construct a power generation plant at AK Steel Holding Corp.'s Middletown Works.

The award to Allentown, Pa.-based Air Products and Chemicals Inc. was announced Tuesday.

David Neu, an operations technician at Air Products' Middletown plant, says the project is valued at about $300 million to $350 million and will take two years to construct. It is expected to create about 220 temporary construction jobs.

AK Steel spokesman Alan McCoy says AK Steel would receive all of the steam and electricity the new plant produces and is determining how best to use that energy.

The Energy Department grant will provide 10 percent of the project cost, with other funding to be determined.
