Combining Temperature & Vibration Tests   9/29/2009
In the development of components for military and aerospace applications, engineers must test their designs to stringent temperature and vibration specifications. Often these tests are performed separately, but for designs where temperature shifts can significantly affect vibration response, these tests must be combined.   Continue
Scope Creep 2.0: Embarking Into The Unknown   9/15/2009
Scope creep, as defined by Wikipedia, (also called focus creep, requirement creep, feature creep, function creep) in project management refers to uncontrolled changes in a project's scope. This phenomenon can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented or controlled. It is generally considered a negative occurrence that is to be avoided.   Continue
Biofuel Production From Algae   9/15/2009

The world’s dependence on finite, nonrenewable petroleum is at the heart of many of the environmental and energy challenges we face today. Additionally, transportation fuel use is a major contributor to global warming: more than 30 percent of the CO2 emissions in the United States come from the burning of petroleum fuel for transportation.   Continue

Motion Control Components & System Architecture   9/14/2009
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how OEM machine designers can benefit from the different types of motion control components available today. This paper compares how motion control solutions based on chips, cards, and drives fit into different ma-chine requirements, and how they affect the outcome of a machine design. This paper also examines mo-tion system architectures to illustrate the design trade-offs. Examples discussed include medical/biotech equipment, a 3D printer, and an industrial paper-cutting machine.   Continue
Assess Design Alternatives With Axiomatic Design   9/14/2009
Even with strong programs, processes and control initiatives, some products still are more robust and better performers than others. With the operational side of their businesses under good process control, companies now find that quality and robustness must be designed into the product. No amount of analysis and parameter tuning can markedly improve a product with fundamental contradictions designed into it.   Continue
Solid State Drives Make Headway As Technology Matures: Will They Replace The HDD?   9/14/2009
Everyone has heard of Moore’s Law, but what about Grove’s Law: that a new technology must be at least ten times better than the existing one in order to displace it?  Are Solid State Drives (SSDs) on the way to becoming the next technology leap-ahead in the computer industry?   Continue
A Cost-Effective Approach To Maximizing International Intellectual Property Protection   9/11/2009
International competition is increasing daily. Competitors are quick to copy and customers are looking for the best price. Brand name and personal relationships still carry some weight, but not as in years past. One way for U.S. manufacturers to compete effectively in today’s marketplace is by controlling innovation through intellectual property (IP).   Continue
Generating Wealth Through Innovation   9/11/2009

Much has been made of the demise of U.S. manufacturing. Once the U.S. was a manufacturing powerhouse, but much of its industry has now moved overseas or south of the border to low-cost countries such as China, India and Mexico. Eighty percent of the U.S. economy is now serviced based. But, despite the loss of manufacturing jobs, the U.S. still has the world’s largest gross domestic product (GDP) at about $14 trillion. That is three times larger than Japan’s GDP (which ranks second) and four times larger than either Germany’s or China’s.   Continue

Harnessing GPU Power For Accelerating Ray-Tracing   9/11/2009
Harnessing GPU power might speed up the rendering processes but the real challenge lies in freeing the artist from the render-change-repeat workflow and giving them more time to be creative.   Continue
Project Management Of Complex & Embedded Systems   9/9/2009
Many of the examples we present throughout this book come from the automotive supplier and customer world because we work in that environment every day. We suggest that most of the automotive development and production ideas have universal value—particularly the concept of process and design controls. In some cases, we will identify where a particular approach conveniently satisfies embedded development or, in other cases, service process development.   Continue
