Riding SOLO   8/27/2009
When Roberto Velozzi works together with his partners to try and turn a concept photo into the SOLO lightweight plug-in hybrid electric crossover, it’s not just a couple of guys in the garage trying to build a car. The founder and CEO of the Los Angeles, CA-based start-up automotive OEM, Velozzi knows the challenges that the automotive industry pose are laborious and brutal.   Continue
Shape Shifting Cat   8/27/2009
The U.S. military was having trouble finding a bike. According to Erik Brinkman, chairman of the Denver, CO-based Panther Motorcycles, motorcycles hadn’t played a role in the military since World War II. The military was looking for something rugged, a bike that could navigate narrow paths on crumbling mountainsides; a solution to replace the mules currently serving terrains that were impossible for Humvees and other vehicles to navigate.   Continue

Global Intellectual Property Management 101   8/24/2009

Preventing An American Brain Drain   8/19/2009
Inventive imaginations drive product innovation. That’s the way Philip Remedios sees it. In the latest PD&D Fireside Chat, the principal and director of design and development at BlackHägen Design questions what America is going to do to safeguard our future as the world's top innovator?   Continue
Integrating Design & Manufacturing Teams   8/19/2009
Efficient electronics manufacturing processes begin with the design process. Consideration must given not only to product functionality,  but to any qualification testing  and design for manufacturing (DFM) as the consequences of not doing so may add time and cost to the development cycle or production.   Continue
Avoiding Pitfalls In Incremental Product Line Adoption   8/19/2009
The advertised benefits of product lines (PLs) in cost reduction, time to market and quality are hard to ignore; however, the push for PLs comes after you already have multiple disjointed software products. At that point, you know you need an organized software platform, but reworking your existing product can be daunting and difficult to fund.   Continue
Pro-Engineer Promotes Passion For High School Students   8/18/2009
At first glance, Steve Ullrich’s Engineering III class looks a little like organized chaos. As part of the Lakeville South High School’s Industrial Technology curriculum, 26 juniors and seniors are deep in Pro/ENGINEER, and buzzing with robotics discussions, as the Minnesota Regional FIRST Robotics Competition draws near.   Continue
A Night On The Wild Side   8/17/2009
I’ve been writing about making the most of unemployment, turning the economic situation to your advantage, maybe even getting a job. All of which often means tackling something you wouldn’t have tried if you were working – like a winter weekend hiking in the mountains.   Continue
