Get The Picture   6/22/2009
The art of photography, amateur and professional, has come a long way. From the first permanent photo taken by French inventor, Nicéphore Niépce in the 1820s to instant color film production introduced in 1963 by Polaroid, memories of weddings, births, family reunions, ceremonies and parties could now be captured with a push of a button. Developed film could be stored in albums and photo boxes for families and friends to share with each other during holidays or unexpected visits.   Continue
Rainone’s Rules   6/22/2009
I believe that innovative companies win when times are tough. Let’s talk about enhancing your innovation odds. In this environment, it might be useful to think about happy accidents for a change, instead of train wrecks.   Continue
Acting Out   6/22/2009
Each type of actuator has advantages and disadvantages given the requirements of the application. Each has a niche, and it depends on the design specifications when determining which type would best satisfy the applicable parameters. While the many available actuators eye the open spot on a bill of materials - depending on the design - one type according to industry members, has come to stand out in front of the others in terms of innovation, the electromechanical linear actuator.   Continue
Scorpion King   6/19/2009
The idea came to him while he was in China. Ronn Maxwell, CEO and founder of Ronn Motors and father of the Scorpion and Limited Edition Scorpion HX eco-exotic sports cars, was going to build a sports car in China for a large bus manufacturing client. After his visit in 2007, he found that the project simply proved to be too difficult.   Continue
Smart Camera Mounts   4/16/2009
Stabilization is key for the effective use of smart cameras in the machine vision industry. If slippage occurs in the camera- mount setup, the camera's angle can be knocked out of line. If slippage occurs in an inspection camera mounted overhead of a conveyor belt whipping two or three parts past the lens every second, defects may go unnoticed, sorting may be impaired, and overall quality assurance may be compromised.     Continue
Embedded CFD Reduces Thermal Prototypes   4/15/2009
Azonix, a division of Crane Co., introduces the new Terra computer, which is sealed to eliminate failures due to contamination and designed to operate at temperatures up to 60°C.   Continue
See Id…please?   3/9/2009
Why do some people take offense to the “See ID” request on the back of credit/debit   Continue
Show Me The Money   3/5/2009
Anybody who advises SMMs on strategies such as developing new products, should also help them answer the money questions involved. New product development is an investment and may require a significant amount of capital to be successful.  These are decisions with considerable risk and every effort should be made to help the manufacturer do a good diagnosis before offering a prescription.     Continue
Bringing Back Lawn Jarts   3/4/2009
In respect to how some companies are dealing with the situation, a recent Wall Street Journal posting caught my eye. And while the application might not sound as severe as if it were military, aerospace or consumer electronics applications, it still left me with mixed emotions.  Basically, the March 3 reports states that in an effort to cut costs, stay profitable and maintain their competitiveness, many toy makers are re-launching brands from as long ago as 20 years.     Continue
Stability In Sight?   3/4/2009
I can’t go so far as to indicate growth, but less fluctuation seems to make the folks on Wall Street a little happier and infuse greater capital into businesses.  Every sector was down a minimum of 12 points, with some closer to 50. Overall, the index stands at 1081.32, down over 130 points from last week and nearly 240 since the end of January.     Continue
