Brand Names vs. Generics   10/2/2009
When many distributors reach an agreement to be a franchise distributor of a name brand product line, the company agrees not to carry off-brands or competing brands in many cases. But if design engineers are given some flexibility, they could make significant cost-saving decisions by integrating generic or house brand components — especially in non-mission critical areas.   Continue
Hush Little Baby   10/2/2009
Plastic, it’s everywhere from household electronics and clothes to appliances and bottles. One common plastic product? The baby bottle. For some, this may not be a big deal, but for others, like Marlene Sirota, mother of six, and president and co-founder of Key Baby and Weil Baby, it caused some concern. Many baby bottles are molded using Polycarbonate (PC), a glass-clear plastic that contains Bisphenol-A (BPA) – an organic compound used in the production of PC that has raised questions about certain health effects.   Continue
Harsh Braking   10/2/2009
Friction materials in brakes have become more environmentally friendly in recent years and now produce greater friction coefficients with less wear. According to Keith Hogan, product manager with MN-based Tolomatic, rubber boots and seals have been a few brake additions to improver product reliability in harsh environments. The boots and seals help keep contamination from interfering with moving components.   Continue
Super Lathe   10/1/2009
Microabrasive blasting provides a way to pinpoint cleaning, surface texturing, polishing, etching and material removal from hard to reach device surfaces. It projects a blast of clean, dry air mixed with abrasive media, delivered through a nozzle selected to suit the application. Due to the nature of the technology, most processing is still manual. While the PSI, media mixture and safety measures are automatic, an operator still controls the direction of the blast.   Continue
Little Dune Buggy   10/1/2009
HPI Racing, the CA-based leading manufacturer of radio control (RC) cars, trucks and monster trucks, revamped a company staple when it introduced the Baja 5B 2.0 1/5-scale desert buggy that can reach more than 40 mph. HPI’s Senior Designer Akira Kogawa, the 5B’s creator, didn’t want to build an ordinary, ready to run (RTR) 1/5-scale buggy. He wanted the Baja to stand out from anything that the large scale market had seen — the small scale market consists of 1/8 and 1/10-scale high-performance cars and trucks.   Continue
Increased Productivity & Reduced Energy Consumption   9/30/2009
COAX Technology takes the multi-stage ejector into a new dimension and offers industrial manufacturers the opportunity to achieve previously impossible gains in productivity and reductions in energy consumption.   Continue
Aging Electronic Product Redesign   9/30/2009
Redesign of aging electronic products presents unique challenges and creative opportunities to electrical engineers. For a complex electronic product, the quality of the redesign effort often rests in how well the redesign-engineering team understands how the design should be updated. Study of the original electronic design is necessary; understanding how the original equipment functions, and what design choices the original engineering team applied to achieve that functionality is essential.   Continue

Technology In The New Administration
I really don't think that this President is looking for a break although I am sure that he will take one if it is in the offering. He seems to welcome criticism, contemplate it and if need be make adjustments.  Continue
