Saving American Manufacturing is Like ‘Pushing Water Uphill’
Trying to save American manufacturing is like pushing water uphill, says Lynn Tilton founder and CEO of Patriarch Partners. On stage at Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Customer Forum (November 12-13, 2013) she speaks about transforming industry in North America, and her mission to reinvent and resurrect manufacturing. "The number one driving force [of change]... is people standing shoulder to shoulder and moving in the right direction,” she says. “If we do not change, there will be no future.”
Dassault Systèmes’ and its customers like Tilton believe that the 3DEXPERIENCE business platform will help ensure this future, transforming industry all together.

This is no easy task. "We roll the stone to the top of the mountain, and when we get there, we know the stone will roll back down," explains Bernard Charlès, president and CEO of Dassault Systemes.
"We want to harmonize product nature and life, and create a platform that will enable people to use the virtual world to formulate their ideas,” Charlès adds. “The ultimate of knowledge is experience. The value of the experience goes far beyond the value of the product."
The company is developing a united ecosystem of partners, working with universities and the government to secure the future. "Opportunity lies ahead of us," says Scott Berkey, CEO, SIMULIA. "Our customers, our partners, and Dassault Systèmes need this pipeline of talent to be successful." Continuing growth is key component to overall Dassault strategy.
Tilton was one of many customers speaking at the conference. A noted investor, and industrialist, she manages 75 companies with revenues of more than $8 billion, in 14 different industry sectors. Through her career, Tilton has set out to prove that making money, and making the world a better place, are not mutually exclusive. She wants to give people the dignity of work. Buying failing companies, Tilton describes her job as "a selfish journey" where she is "the lady of life" working to rebuild America, one company at a time.
For Tilton, the forces of revolution are artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors and chips to measure information, and virtual reality. She explains that companies, like the ones she owns, need software that makes sure machines are working correctly, and predicative technology to provide warnings before something happens. With the availability of these technologies, the way we “make” things will require fewer bodies, but the bodies will be those working here in America, explains Tilton. "Every product I make and every process I use will change…The products we make today will no longer be the products we make five years from now."
"In my work we transcend dreams to reality," she says. "If you can dream it, we can build it." Tilton is dreaming of a manufacturing revolution in America. "In the end, it’s all about the dream," she says.
