The right brake can keep operations working smoothly on the simplest packaging lines and in the most sophisticated robotic applications. This report takes a look at four new additions that have been made to the world of stopping and starting.
Linear Motion Brakes
Featuring sizes up to 3 meters in length, the Eclipse Linear Motion Brake has been developed for use with linear motors, belt-drive stages, ball screw stages, and linear motor stages. The spring-applied design is suitable for holding and emergency stop situations in the automation, packaging, semiconductor, material handling, and machining equipment industries. Applications include holding in the X, Y, or Z axes, stabilization during fine operations, and power-failure holding and safety.
Stage Brakes
The Eclipse Stage Brake is billed as a solution for vertical and horizontal applications, providing emergency holding and stopping for increased safety. Designed for ease of installation, precision, and security, it provides simple mounting procedures that permit both vertical and horizontal holding for installation on the non-driven end of ball screw stages. This type of installation reduces the risks associated with motor shaft/coupling failure. A true zero backlash brake, it also allows high lead on ball screw stages without fear of back-drive. Applications include material handling, packaging, machine tools, robotics, electronics, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Magnetic Particle Brakes
Designed for use in web tension control, NBS-5 and NBS-10 magnetic particle brakes offer broad torque ranges for maximum flexibility. They use magnetic powder as the medium for transmitting torque between the rotating shaft and stationary housing. Torque is controlled by varying the input current supplied to the brake's coil for precise linear tension control. The brake's design uses no friction facings, providing quiet, dust-free operation and ensuring stable torque output throughout the life of the product. Output torque and web tension are totally independent of any changes in web or roll speed. As a result, the brake does not add tension disturbances during speed changes.
C-Faced Clutch-Brakes
The new FMCB 1625 clutch-brake has been added to the Air Champ product line. This flange- or foot-mounted C-faced clutch-brake mounts directly to a 15-20 hp NEMA 254/256T frame motor. Its rugged, air-engaged design is engineered to combine power with versatility for controlled starts and stops. An optional input unit and foot mount are available for belt-driven applications. The foot-mounted unit allows for an offset motor or drive train mount. The single-piston design prevents overlap between the clutch and brake, while the open housing allows for increased thermal horsepower.
