The new PACSystems DSM324i motion controller touts powerful motion features and a robust fiber optic command interface to high-performance Beta/Series Fanuc servos. The motion controller is built to improve machine uptime and yield, increase application flexibility, decrease wiring costs and labor, and boost engineering productivity. Engineers can turn to the DSM324i motion controller as an alternative to mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, stepper servo solutions. The unit, which allows changeover time between product runs to be kept to just minutes, is designed to improve noise immunity and reduce wiring costs. The motion controller’s fiber optic interface to the Beta i series servos increases system flexibility by expanding the distance between servo nodes to up to 100 meters. Working in tandem with PACSystems RX3i Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) or Series 90-30 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), the DSM324i fosters increased engineering productivity and machine application flexibility. Furthermore, the motion controller supports a wide range of scalable I/O and communication options and is able to control up to four servo axes. This capability enables the DSM3241i to support complex single- and multi-axis motion control applications. The Beta i series servos incorporate absolute feedback, eliminating the need for machines to find home positions when they recover from power losses. The DSM324i motion controller supports high-speed Local Logic and I/O as well as high-speed I/O, Synchronous with the motion control system, this makes the controller ideal for applications requiring high-speed registration control, such as labeling and printing. The DSM324i is suitable for both centralized and distributed architectures and includes a powerful electronic CAM function. Electronic CAMs allow machines to perform complex motion functions that require tight coordination between multiple axes. Electronic CAMs are similar to mechanical CAMs, but they are not subject to mechanical wear. The CAM profile can follow a master encoder mounted on the machine, another controlled axis on the DSM324i, or a time-based (virtual) master source within the same controller module. The motion controller’s CAM function is ideal for applications such as rotary cutoff, flying shear, profiled container filling, and material handling. The DSM324i works with the manufacturer’s universal programming software, Proficy Machine Edition, to provide a single point of programming. To simplify system engineering and increase productivity, Proficy Machine Edition software provides one environment for control, HMI, and motion; offers powerful programming and diagnostic tools; and incorporates a common tag database. The plug-and-play fiber optic interface to the BetaiSeries servos reduces overall commissioning and maintenance time as no configuration is needed. Engineers can choose between incremental or absolute positioning feedback extending the application flexibility of the integrated system. Multiple DSM modules can be installed in a single motion control system to offer more axes of motion in one application.
