Photon Engineering recently released the 6.1 version of their optical engineering software—the FRED 6.1 Series. According to the company, FRED is an advanced 3-D CAD optical engineering software program capable of simulating the propagation of light through virtually any optical/illumination system. According to the company, this release features:

  • Enhancements to FRED’s ray-tracing and beam propagation speed and modeling capabilities with the power to trace unlimited number of beams or rays on multiple-core PCs.
  • CAD import capabilities that reduce non-uniform rational B-spline (NURB) complexity with user-definable accuracy.
  • Realistic optical and illumination modeling.
  • Two new scatter models—the tabulated PSD that reads power spectral density measurements and a K-correlation model—with the capabilities to model both spectral data and scatter degradation over time.
  • A virtual ray buffer that automatically stores rays to disk after reaching a user-definable threshold.
  • Limitations of the maximum number of rays in FRED only by computer disk space.
