

Measuring 5 x 5 x 1 mm, the HDJD-S722-QR999 CMOS color sensor is able to detect the presence of a specified color and identify its exact coordinate across the full color spectrum. Suitable applications include color measurement in blood glucose monitoring and other medical applications; stain detection in yarns during textile manufacturing; and control of the color point of red, green, and blue LED backlighting in LCD displays. The sensor is also suited for applications in the paint, pigment and coating, cosmetics, and food and beverage industries. The monolithic CMOS IC sensor, which converts colored light into proportional RGB voltage outputs, houses integrated RGB color filters and three interleaved sets of 3 x 3 photodiode arrays. This design is intended to minimize the effect of contamination and optical aperture misalignment. The photodiodes convert the RGB light components into photocurrents, and the transimpedance amplifiers convert the photocurrent to analog voltages. The voltage output of the red, green, and blue channels increases linearly with increasing light intensity. Engineers can independently set the gain of each channel. Uniform color filter arrays in the photodiode active area are included to help resolve potential inaccuracies caused by light gradient, optical aperture misalignment and tilting, and irregularities of the package surface. Operating from a single 5 V power source, the device comes in a QFN (quad flat, no leads) lead-free package and operates in temperatures from -40° to +85°C. The HDJD-S722-QR999 color sensor is priced at $10 per in low-volume quantities.
