AlSiC (Aluminum Silicon Carbide) is a metal matrix composite well suited for thermal management applications for high brightness LEDs. This RoHs-compliant material enables a tailored coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) to ensure compatibility with various electronic devices and assemblies. The AISiCs isotropic CTE value can be adjusted for specific applications by modifying the Al-metal/SiC-particulate ratio. AlSiC features enhanced CTE matching and is said to exhibit a high thermal conductivity, resulting in efficient thermal dissipation. Its high thermal conductivity effectively dissipates the heat that can influence LED brightness, efficiency, color, efficacy, and product lifetime. A near and net-shape fabrication process produces the composite material and fabricates the product geometry. This process is designed to generate a cost-effective product and allow rapid prototyping in high-volume advanced thermal management applications. Additional features include cavities, pedestals, and alignment options. The manufacturer’s casting process is said to enable integration of high thermal conductivity inserts (greater than 1,000 W/mK) or cooling tubes for more advanced thermal management applications.
