Low-profile Motor-drive Module

A motor-drive power module with control circuitry for industrial and both military and commercial aerospace applications promises effective heat dissipation while maintaining a profile of just 0.49 in.

The 3.5-by-2.22-in. module operates from 18 to 50 Vdc at 30 A continuous (50 A peak) to drive a three-phase brushless motor. The controller combines a control and feedback circuit with six power FETs in a direct-bonded copper, epoxy-encapsulated power module.

To achieve its claim for optimum heat dissipation, the assembly is mounted with a special adapter plate. In addition, to respond quickly to overloads, the motor drive and control assembly includes a thermistor to sense temperature and a resistor to sense current.

Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C. The motor drive with both power module and control circuitry ranges in price from $100 to $500. Starting price for the power module alone ranges from $25 to $60.
