Covering The Scorpion King

Maxwell’s excitement was infectious. He gave impassioned anecdotes about every design choice, noting that you could find a little piece of each of his favorite automobiles in the design.

When you get excited about a topic, it comes easy

By David Mantey, Editor, PD&D

This past week, I’ve been swimming under a deadline. Let me take this opportunity to apologize to those of you who are sitting 233 deep in the Inbox queue, my response is coming. I worked long hours putting together the daily newsletter while balancing my time with the print product.

I was down to the wire. I had one story to finish before the file was sent to the printer and we could all join together in the middle of the office for a group hug and a giant sigh of relief. Okay, so we’re not exactly a group of huggers, but the collective joy was definitely present.

My final article, covering Ronn Maxwell of Texas-based Ronn Motors and the design behind the new eco-exotic Scorpion sports car and hydrogen fuel injection system, came easy. I recently had the interview with Ronn to discuss the vehicle’s sixth month development and production from start to finish.

Maxwell’s excitement was infectious. He gave impassioned anecdotes about every design choice, noting that you could find a little piece of each of his favorite automobiles in the design.

It made my job easy. I couldn’t wait to revisit the interview – and take another glance at the car photos – and get to work on sharing how once man’s passion transformed into a sleek, but expensive, addition to the auto industry. The $250K price tag is easier to handle when you hear that his team already has a more economic version up on the board.

I know it’s a brief example; I’ll cut it short so I don’t take too much from the article. It was just a welcomed reminder that when you work with passionate people who are fired up about what they are working on, it spreads to everyone who comes in contact with them. I’d try and coin a phrase, but I can’t think of a happy marriage joining ‘design’ and ‘plague.’
