Controller And Drive System

The new CDS-3310 single-axis controller and drive system is designed to provide high performance and precise control of a single brush or brushless servo motor. The unit includes a programmable motion control, a 500 W drive, and packaging that eliminates the need for external wiring between the controller and drive. Packaged in a 5.15 x 8.25 in. metal enclosure, the CDS-3310 accepts differential encoder inputs up to 12 MHz. To enable it to accommodate electronic gearing and dual-loop applications, the unit also provides dual encoder inputs. The device features PID compensation with notch filter and velocity/acceleration feedforward, non-volatile program memory with multitasking, uncommitted digital and analog I/O, and electronic gearing and teach-and-playback modes of motion. The CDS-3310 also features a PWM drive that operates up to 7 A continuous, 60 V, and an on-board dc-to-dc converter that ensures convenient voltage input from a single 18 to 60 Vdc supply. Software commands provide diagnostics and programmable amplifier gains and allow the drive to be easily configured for brushless or brush motors. The PWM switching frequency is 60 kHZ, and the unit’s amplifier provides protection against over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, and over-temperature situations. To reduce communication overhead, the CDS-3310 features a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port and up to eight controllers that can be networked. As a result, the host computer communicates only with the master CDS-3310 in the network, which, in turn, communicates with the network’s other controllers. The controller and drive unit is priced at $495 in quantities of 100.
