They are cost-effective alternatives to ESD protection components based on semiconductors such as Zener and TVS diodes, to which they are also technically superior. In many cases, they can replace these semiconductor diodes on a one-to-one basis with respect to form, fit and function.

CeraDiodes are ceramic multilayer semiconductor components for the ESD protection of data, audio and video lines (e.g. USB, Ethernet, IEEE 1394 and HDMI), analog and digital connections, ICs and inputs/outputs in electronic equipment.

EPCOS offers design engineers a new data book: CeraDiode for ESD Protection.

CeraDiodes are fully bidirectional components. They satisfy the requirements of the international ESD standard IEC 61000-4-2, level 4, tested within the human body model (330 Ω / 150 pF).

The ESD protection properties of CeraDiodes are constant up to an operating temperature of 85 °C, whereas those of semiconductor diodes already begin to derate from 25 °C. Moreover, the reaction time for CeraDiodes is under 0.5 ns.

The CeraDiode range comprises the single series 0402 (SOD723), 0603 (SOD523) and 1003 (SOD323) and the arrays 0508, 0612 (both 4-in-1), 0506 (SOT666) and 1012 (SOT 23-6L) with various operating voltages (VDC) of 5.6 V to 30 V and capacitances from 0.6 to 470 pF.

Because high-speed data lines such as USB, IEEE 1394 and Ethernet carry very high data rates of several 100 Mbit/s, the capacitance of the ESD protection component must be minimized in order to avoid transmission losses.

CeraDiodes of the high-speed series satisfy the requirements of USB 2.0, IEEE 1394, Ethernet and others thanks to their low capacitances of 0.6 to 10 pF (verified in compliance tests). These interfaces can be protected by both, single components or space-saving arrays.

The 72-page publication provides an overview of the EPCOS CeraDiode line, a comparison of CeraDiodes with semiconductor diodes, a complete listing of types, information about the EPCOS high-speed CeraDiode series, and much more.

Go to www.epcos.com/ceradiode for the complete CeraDiode data book, data sheets, comparative characteristics of CeraDiodes and semiconductor diodes, technical background material, an application matrix, and further application examples. The CeraDiode data book is also available in a printed version, as a sample kit.
